A short history of German animation

From silhouettes to family features.

The pioneers

In the 1920s and 1930s, Lotte Reiniger cut silhouette films such as Papageno, and Oskar Fischinger made abstract colour films set to music.

East and West

After the war, the DEFA studio in Dresden made films for East German children, while West German television made series such as Die Sendung mit der Maus.

Today

Studios in Munich, Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne make family features such as Tafiti: Across the Desert.
